A post in Spanish, a reply in German, a group where people write in French: from today Disbigle translates them for you. Under a post written in another language you find "Translate"; one click and the text appears in your language, with "Show original" to go back.

Translated here, not elsewhere
The translation runs on the Disbigle server itself, with Bergamot: the engine Firefox uses to translate pages, born from a European research project with Mozilla. The text of posts is not sent to Google, DeepL or anyone else, and nobody learns what you read.
What it does
- Five languages to start: English, Italian, Spanish, French and German, each into the others. More can be added.
- It recognises the language of every post, also the ones from diaspora* and other servers that don't say which language they are in. "Translate" appears only when the post is in a language other than yours.
- Mentions, hashtags and links stay as they are: they are kept aside and put back after the translation.
- Fast: a few tenths of a second the first time, then the translation is kept and comes back at once, until the author edits the post.
- In Mastodon apps too: apps with a translate button, like the official Mastodon app, use it with Disbigle.
On your own server
Translation is optional. Whoever runs a Disbigle server installs the small translation service that comes with it (about 35 MB per language, no graphics card needed) or points Disbigle to a LibreTranslate server. How to run your own server.
