A few days after groups arrived, they learned new things: you can name them and share in them, they reach diaspora*, and their moderators decide who comes in and what gets published. And a new shortcut: @all.

Name a group, share in it
Groups now show up in search and among the suggestions when you type @. If you are a member, naming a group in a public post shares it there too. Or open the menu of any public post and choose "Share in a group": it shows in the group and in its members' Home, not a second time on your profile.
Public groups on diaspora*
diaspora* has no groups, so there a public group is an account: search for it (for example [email protected]) and add it to an aspect to join. The group reshares what is written in it, your comments join its discussion, and a public post that mentions the group is written in it. They were already reachable from Mastodon, Lemmy and Friendica.
Moderators decide
- Joining on approval: a public group stays readable by everyone, but joining becomes a request that a moderator approves, from Mastodon and diaspora* too.
- Posts and comments on approval: what members write waits in a "To approve" tab. Until then only its author and the moderators see it; once approved, it is published and goes out to the other networks. Admins and moderators don't wait.
Both are switches in the group's settings.
@all, for your contacts
Write @all in a post and you name all your mutual contacts at once: the people you follow who follow you back, and only them. In a post for some aspects, it names only the contacts in those aspects.
