Groups arrive on Disbigle

Disbigle now has groups, public, private or secret, with admins and moderators. Public groups can be joined from Mastodon and the fediverse.

Disbigle now has groups: places where people who share an interest, a town or a project can talk together, with their own members and their own rules. Open "Groups" in the menu of the web app to find one or start your own.

One conversation with replies from several networks

Public, private or secret

  • Public: anyone can read the group and join it.
  • Private: the group shows up in the list, but only members read its posts. You ask to join and a moderator says yes.
  • Secret: nobody outside sees it exists. You get in only with an invitation.

A group can become more private later, never less: what was written for a few people stays for a few people.

Admins, moderators and members

Whoever creates a group is its admin and can name moderators. Moderators approve requests, remove posts and members; admins also change the name, the description, the pictures and the privacy. New requests, invitations and approvals arrive as notifications, on the phone too.

Posts written in a group stay in the group: they do not end up on your profile or in public timelines, and members find them in their Home, marked with the group's name.

Public groups reach the fediverse

A public group is also an account on the fediverse, the same way Lemmy and Friendica groups work. From Mastodon you follow the group to join it; the group then shares its members' posts with you, and your replies land in the group's conversation.

Private and secret groups stay on Disbigle. The fediverse has no reliable way yet to keep a closed group closed across servers, and we prefer a smaller group to posts that leak.

Still to come

Groups are in the web app for now: the Android and iPhone apps will get them soon. If you try them and something feels wrong, tell us on GitHub.
