Bold, headings, lists and quotes in your posts, without learning anything: the box where you write now has formatting buttons, and a preview of the post before you publish it.
The buttons
- Bold, italic, strikethrough, heading, quote, bulleted and numbered list, code and link.
- Select some words and press a button; press it again to undo. Lists work on every line you select, and number themselves.
- On a computer: Ctrl+B bold, Ctrl+I italic, Ctrl+K link, Ctrl+E code (⌘ on a Mac).
See it before you publish
Preview shows the post exactly as it will appear, mentions and hashtags included. And when you paste a link, its preview with image and title appears under the text while you write.
Why Markdown, and not blocks
Behind the buttons there is Markdown, the same format diaspora* has always used: a few symbols (**bold**, ## heading, > quote) that every server of the fediverse understands. A block editor would be heavier and its layouts would get lost on Mastodon and diaspora*; this way your posts look right everywhere. And if you already know Markdown, you can keep typing it by hand.
On your phone too
The buttons and the preview are also in the Android and iPhone apps: update them with Obtainium or SideStore.
